Strategy for Stimulus-based Conversation for EL Oral

24 March 2016

Dear Parents,
Today we reviewed the Learning Sheets in class and the children were encouraged to ask questions pertaining to the meaning of words and the reasons why certain questions were answered in such a way. I am happy to report that a number of students who had formally been very quiet and did not participate, had raised their hands today and asked their questions in class. The others who had usually questioned were also given the opportunity to voice their opinion or ask their questions as usual. We then had a fruitful time discussing their queries in class while I was reviewing the learning sheets. I hope that this trend will continue, as I continue to encourage the children to learn actively in class in a non-threatening environment. The children learnt active and passive voice, as well as how to join sentences with connectors today.

As messaged today, the children will be having their Oral SA1 on 25 April. We had learnt how to elaborate for oral stimulus-based conversation using the strategy of T.R.E.E.S. I'll blog more in my next post. We will be reviewing oral strategies for reading aloud, and stimulus-based conversation in the coming week.

Homework due on Monday 28 March will be the exercises (cover page to p. 15) from the companion booklet issued to them. They were told to do their best and to highlight any queries if they are in doubt when they are doing their homework. We will review this booklet on Monday. They will be having their Spelling for Week 2 on Monday as well.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!

21 March 2016

Dear Parents,
Today I briefed the children on my expectations for Term 2 and encouraged them to work hard. Then I collected my holiday homework and then the children had their Spelling for T2W1.

The Spelling list is attached for your information in the next blog post. This was given out in Term 1 Week 10.

We had a short Grammar Quiz at the end of the class.

Homework (due tomorrow 22 March) - A one page handwritten journal on A4 size blank paper (with illustrations or photographs) on "What I did during the March holidays" - to write only one or two paragraphs -  but to make the description of the contents interesting. This exercise is a good practice for writing as well as stimulus-based conversation.

8 March 2016 (plus information on Holiday Homework for March)

Dear Parents,
Today we reviewed the strategies for oral stimulus-based conversation. I also demonstrated how we can use the strategies T.R.E.E.S to elaborate. I have also informed the children regarding their holiday homework, due Term 2 Week 1 Day 1. It is to take a picture, print and paste it on a piece of A4-size paper and then write or type a story based on it. They are to be the ones taking the picture as we are doing the STELLAR reader on 'Basic Photography'. I told them about my story of the flower pot which happened during my Primary School days as an example. For me, I would then take a photograph of the flower pot and then narrate the story behind it.

We have read the reader and the children were given their copies to bring back as their manual to refer to when taking their photographs.

By the way, today's homework would be to review T.R.E.E.S as they would be practising in class tomorrow.

Thank you.
Have a good day.

17 - 19 and 22 - 23 Feb 2016

Dear Parents,

From 17 Feb onwards till 19 Feb, we had doing revision, filing and corrections, as well as exploring STELLAR Reader Unit 3 - Ride On, using the KWL (Know, Want to know, Learnt) method. The children were encouraged to look at their prior knowledge of the topic, asked what they want to know based on the given topic and picture stimulus, and then later connect by reading the passage (this method is for non-fictional text) to find out if their questions are answered, and what other answers did the passage provide. We will continue this exploration next week, after the Term Review on Tuesday 23 Feb.

I will be away for my MOE full day course on 22 and 23 Feb. I will be back on 24 Feb.
For 22 Feb, the children will be doing a 40-question MCQ worksheet to revise Grammar, and each will then be given the answers for self-checking. This is to help them to review what they had learnt.

For 23 Feb, it will be their Term Review Paper during the EL lesson. Please refer to the note given to your child in their EL file for the sections to be tested. Do let me know if you had not seen the note.

As such, they would not have missed teaching and learning time.
